Something incredibly significant happened yesterday. Something I was almost positive would never happen happened. It's mind boggling, I tell you.
"So, what happened?", you ask. Well, I have a new quote for my quote book. A quote from a Miami student. A quote that wasn't said by one of my closest and dearest. I went to dinner and to the Ice Cream Social that followed it with some people from the dorm. The one girl, Lisa, is someone that I met at Orientation. The other girl was my roomate, Megan. The third person in our group was this guy named Chris, another first year that lives on the first floor. At the ice cream social, another guy from our dorm, Scott, came to sit with us. We were having the most random conversation. Seriously, I don't even remember what all we talked about, but at one point, the conversation went to digging a giant hole that went to China and wether or not we would be able to fall through and actually make it to China. Someone said that gravity would keep you from making it out the other end...it would start to pull you back. So, Chris suggested starting on a chair so that you would have enough momentum to make it out the other end. That brought the conversation to that old story that if everyone in China jumped off a three foot platform into the ocean, it would create a wave that would destroy the earth. It was at this time that Chris said, "You know what tectonic plates and three foot chairs have in common? China people." I realize that, to you, this may not be so funny. However, in the heat of the moment, we all thought it was hysterical. This same group headed uptown for a free concert after the social. On the way up there, we found another girl from our dorm. Her name is Heather, but no one has seen much of her as she is in the Marching Band. The concert was fairly decent. I bought the opening band's cd for $5.00. After the concert we came back to the dorm and hung out in the basement. We played this game that I will have to show you guys sometime...it is freaking awesome but hard to explain. After the game, we headed up to the rooms to get some food and drink before heading back down to the basement to talk about all kinds of things. It wasn't a game of "Ueber Truth", but it was still a nice way to learn more about these people that I will have to get to know. Even though I had a nice time last night, I'm becoming more and more convinced that I will not be staying here. Aside from a core group of people I have met, there aren't many friendly people around here. Smiling and saying "hello" to someone results in a "hello" wrapped in an icy look. I'm always uncomfortable and I am always on edge. The other reason for me not staying is money related. As you all know, my financial aid package was taken away because the school didn't believe that my mom didn't receive child support. Like my mom would lie about that. In any case, losing the aid makes it difficult for me to stay here. I am going to need to go abroad for my major at some point (As thrilled as I am that I get to go, it really is mandatory.), and I don't want my mom to be in debt for years to come because of that...that, and paying for a school that DOESN"T TRUST US! Transfer is inevitable, but that doesn't mean that I am going to fill my diary with tales of "Woe is me...I hate it here." I am trying. The quote proves it. Later Days! |
